Similes

Remember.. they are S-I-Miles not smiles!

A simile compares two things using LIKE or AS.

The kitten is as fluffy AS a cloud.

Your eyes are blue LIKE the sky.

The boy moves slow LIKE a turtle.

See if you can think of your own!!

Summer Holidays Work

Please have your child review math work, use Freckle and Prodigy and especially reading.

The research is clear that children who don't read during the summer can lose up to three to six months of reading progress and that loss has a cumulative, long-term effect.

See research here: https://natlib.govt.nz/schools/reading-engagement/summer-reading/summer-slide-and-summer-reading-research

Food Chains & Food Webs

Remember - A food chain is the smaller (one line) chain like:

Sun --> Plant (Apple Tree) --> Catepillar --> Duck --> Human

A Food Web is like a spider web that draws lines to multiple different food chains (think about when Bill Nye got caught in his food web - so many strings!)

Ancient China Websites

https://www.ducksters.com/history/china/ancient_china.php

https://www.coolkidfacts.com/ancient-china/

https://kids.kiddle.co/Ancient_China

https://kids.nationalgeographic.com/explore/countries/china/#china-dragon.jpg

These are all websites that you can use for your Ancient China booklet.

Why don't we use Wikipedia for research? - Because anybody can go in there and switch the writing up. They can go in and give you bad information! It can be a good place to start for quick reference, but you never know who and when it was last updated, and if the person really knew what they were talking about!

Earth's Rotations - Somewhere on Earth

I forgot to post the video..

So a little review for you. Today we talked about how somewhere on Earth at any given time somebody is just waking up and the sun is rising, somewhere the sun is setting and people are having dinner, some places it is night time and people are tucked into bed!

We also talked about time zones, and how in Korea it is an hour and a half ahead of us, and in Europe it is like 6-7 hours behind us! In Vancouver, they are a whopping 15 hours behind us! That means that at some points they are living a day behind us! Now we know why we get jetlag on planes.. we are almost time traveling!

Science Test Friday

What it covers:

4 Properties of light:

  1. Light can be absorbed
  2. It moves in a straight line
  3. It can be refracted
  4. It can be reflected
4 Properties of sound:

  1. Sound travels in waves;
  2. Sound is caused by vibrations;
  3. Sound can be absorbed and reflected;
  4. Sound can be modified;
Artifical and Natural light - Give examples of each.

Difference between pitch and volume (think back to our musical instruments and what you learned in Ms. Soltes' class).

LED versus Incandescent Lights - which are better and why? Check out this comparison if you need help: https://www.viribright.com/lumen-output-comparing-led-vs-cfl-vs-incandescent-wattage/

Light and sound are Energy! They travel in waves, but we cannot see it without the use of specialized machines.

Sound has Vibrations and solids absorb sound better than soft or liquid objects.

What absorbs light better? Light or dark colors? What reflects better? Light or dark colors?

What happens to light when it hits water? Does it reflect? Bend (refract)? Nothing?

Remember: I have posted a lot of science videos, and we have done many labs testing light and sound. Please look back at it all to help you answer these questions if you are a bit hazy!

Earth Day 2019

Here's the Earth Day song if you want to keep listening to it and reminding yourself what you need to do to help the earth!

Remember we can:
  1. Reduce our footprint
  2. Use less energy - turn off the lights!
  3. Use less water - don't let the faucet run, take shorter showers
  4. Use reusable containers for lunches
  5. Don't use plastic bags, straws etc. Find reusable ones
  6. Pick items that have parts we can reuse - ie: get a metal or glass reusable drink container, not plastic!
  7. Use both sides of the paper, recycle our paper, and don't waste it!
  8. And so much more!
What other ways can you help Mother Earth?
