Hi Students! Please complete the following work.

Math: 

Your Math lesson is posted on Google classroom to help you move through Chapter 1 - Lesson 8. The textbook pages are also posted on Google Classroom. Please remember to click onto the "Classwork" tab at the top of your Google classroom and you will find all of the pages are under the Math PDF section.

STEP-BY-STEP

1. Login to Google Classroom - Follow what the Math task is telling you to do, complete the questions on page 20.
2. Complete the Google Form that is attached on Google Classroom to consolidate your learning. This is the grade I will enter in for this lesson. 
3. Practice on XtraMath - one round at least
4. Spend at least 20 minutes practicing on Prodigy.

Science: 

1. Catch up on your science from last week if you are not finished. This means posting a Flipgrid showing the materials you are going to use for your final product.
2. Read the documents posted on Google Classroom. Pay close attention to the RUBRIC to ensure you are meeting all requirements and are demonstrating your understanding of how you can modify sound including volume and pitch.
3. Once you are done creating your original musical instrument, respond to the Flipgrid I have posted to demonstrate how it works. Remember you must show HOW it works, as well as how it makes different volumes and pitches.
4. This is due on FRIDAY so you have all week to work on it. 
5. Ms. Soltes will guide you on the next steps once you are done 1-4!

Language

1. Complete the journal prompt left for you on Google Classroom - just the one that says March 24th. If you cannot type in the document, please just complete it on paper to hand into me when we return.
2. Read for 20 minutes on Raz Kids or read some of the science books on Epic
3. You can also work on Freckle Language tasks if you have time!

Adjectives

Today we learned what adjectives and describing words are and played a game to practice. Here is the video to review:

Some of our adjectives for different words that we played with:

Puppy: cute, small, fluffy, fast, short, soft, playful, furry, tiny, new, clean, nice, light

Cloud: floating, soft, white, fluffy, beautiful, high, big, dark, light, moving

Baby: cute, new, chubby, clean, fat, small, naughty, short, active, playful

How to use a Dictionary

We've been learning a lot of new words and improving our vocabulary. When we don't know a word, we are practicing new skills by looking up the word in the dictionary and using it in a sentence! This helps all students, whether they are English Language Learners or not.

Please watch the following videos if you need help with putting words in alphabetic order and finding them in the dictionary!

Reading Party Update

As of this morning, we have 3387 minutes towards our reading party in December. Remember: we must read a combined total of 15000 minutes to have the party, and each of you needs to read at least 6 hours to get your invite! Let's finish the year strong! You don't have to read fast, you just need to read!

Sometimes I Feel Like a Fox

Sometimes I feel like a (insert animal here),
Adjective and Adjective. <-- (Must describe the animal)
I (Description of what your animal does)
and (what that means as a human or what you do).

Cinquain Poems

Line A: One vague or general one-word subject or topic
Line B: Two vivid adjectives that describe the topic
Line C: Three interesting -ing action verbs that fit the topic
Line D: Four-word phrase that captures feeling about the topic
Line E: A very specific term that explains Line A

Examples:

Planet

Graceful, ringed

Spinning, whirling, twirling

Dances with neighbour Jupiter

Saturn

Insect

Hidden, hungry

Preening, searching, stalking

Waits as if praying

Mantis

Word Pair Ideas: General topic / specific topic

• bird/parrot (or crow, canary, dove)
• fruit/apple (or pear, banana, watermelon, peach, etc.)
• season/spring (or summer, fall, autumn, winter)
• winter/January (or spring / April, summer / July, autumn / October)
• candy/jawbreaker (or Snickers, jelly beans, liquorice)
• storm/tornado (or hurricane, blizzard, squall)
• water/river (or ocean, lake, stream, creek)
• grandparent/Nana (or Grandma, Papa, Pops)

STEPS:

1. Pick out your most descriptive words from your brainstorming and put your cinquain together.
2. Your cinquain should have 5 lines and the finished poem should only have 11 words.
3. When you are satisfied, recopy the poem onto clean notebook paper.
4. Centre your cinquain on the paper.
5. Begin each line with a capital letter, and remember your commas. Do not use ending punctuation.
6. When finished, double-check for concreteness!

Research Essay - Introduction

Sentences:

1. Your hook: Ask a question, or have an interesting fact (or both)
1. Did you know the ancient Incan's made bridges out of ropes so they could burn the bridge down when their enemies came?
2.  Have you ever wondered about the ancient civilizations and the people who came before us?
2. Give some necessary background information: 
1. Such as when your ancient civilization took place. (The Ancient Incan civilization was alive and well between 1438 and 1532, before the Spainards arrived and took over.)
2. What caused the civilization to stop (Spainards arrived, bringing diseases and battles).
3. Anything else that will get your reader captivated, but isn't found elsewhere in your BODY paragraphs.
3. Thesis: Explain what your essay will be about. Here are a few examples:
1.  "In order to understand ancient ____________, we need to know about the geography, government, values and beliefs, and the people who were important." or 
2. "Ancient _______ is very interesting. Their geography, government, values and beliefs, and the people who lived during this time paint a picture of what life was like ______ years ago. 
3. This essay will discuss the important aspects of the ancient _______ civilization, such as geography, governement and economics, as well as the people and their beliefs and values. 

Introductory Paragraph Example:

          Have you ever wondered about the ancient civilizations and the people who came before us? The Ancient Inca Civilization was the largest ancient civilization in South America. The Incan civilization was alive and well between 1438 and 1532. In 1532 the Spainards arrived and subsequently caused most of the Incan civilization to die out, due to war and diseases, ending a very powerful rule of a large portion of South America. In order to understand the Ancient Incan civilization fully, we must examine the geography, government, and values and beliefs of the Incan people. 

Quick Versus Deep Thinking Questions

Remember our Quick versus Deep Thinking Questions!

Quick Questions about the picture:

• Is there a turtle in the picture?
• How many fish is there in the picture?
• Where is the picture being taken?
• Is the turtle swimming?
• What color is the coral?

Deep Thinking Questions - there is more than one right answer, and you have to use your deep thinking pose..

• What is the turtle doing?
• Swimming away from a shark
• Looking for something to eat
• Racing and playing with her/his friends
• Looking for somewhere to rest
• Who is taking the picture and why are they down there?
• Could be a submarine on a mission
• Maybe a scuba diver - could be a man or a woman!
• Maybe a robot with a camera

Our Deep thinking questions make it so we don't stop thinking.. once we answer part of the question, we continue to WONDER about the rest of what might be happening. A deep thinking question gets you to continue to think. Quick questions get you to answer quickly and then move on, sometime to something else!

Research Paper Outline

Your outline for your ancient civilization paper is due OCTOBER 1st! (Remember that your rough copy of your writing is due October 9th, and your final copy is due October 21st).

Here is my sample using the Ancient Inca Civilization:

I. Geography
        A. Located in South America (western side)
        B. Stretched from coast and up into the mountains (Andes mountains). There was also a lot of jungle where they lived.
        C. They made their bridges out of sturdy vines to make it through the mountains so that they could burn or cut them down if they were being invaded.
        D. They did not live in large cities, they were spread all over the mountains.

Remember, you need to read a minimum of 5 hours to join our reading party by the end of August. There is quite a few students who have already made it. There is also quite a few students who have a lot of work to do! Remind your parents to sign into their Raz Kids parent account to see how much you have read. Don't have one? They can sign up using these instructions:

Parents can request access to their child's information by simply logging in to Kids A-Z as their child and clicking the "Parents" link in the top right and following the instructions to provide an email address. The teacher will need to approve the email address before a parent can see their child's information.

Ancient Civilizations

Make sure you get your parents to sign your sheet explaining the deadlines and dates for things. You will be working on your Ancient Civilization work until the end of the school year!

Here is the outline for all the projects:

Final Copy of Research Paper due: October 21st

PowerPoint (Google Slides) Planner Packet due: November 4th

PowerPoint (Google Slides) Presentation due: November 18th

We will then be presenting and our final activity will be to create a brochure on our Ancient Civilization.

Parents: Students would benefit if they had their own USB stick or a Google Drive account to save their own work and work on at home.

100 Days of School!

In your daily 5 book re-arrange these letters to find as many words as you can! Has to be real words.. if you aren't sure, check the dictionary to see if it is a "real" word!

Points: 

You get a point for each letter - for example if you have a 3 letter word, you get 3 points, a 5 letter word gets you 5 points, a 10 letter word gets you 10 points!

Reading Comprehension Corrections - there is some partner questions I have asked you to do that I didn't before.. that is because I need you to review the work and make corrections and really think about the strategy you should be learning about!!

Words Their Way Instructions

Words Their Way 

Every time you get a new set of words, this is what you need to do: 

• GET your words and do your WRITE & SORT!  

• Do not glue them in! 
• Get them checked by Mrs. Jessie 

• Highlight the word patterns (if there is a pattern – ask if you aren’t sure): 
• Example: CVVC  Boat   or –eg patterns: beg, leg 

• Write your words in complete sentences. If you do not know what the words mean – look in the dictionary! 
• Put your words in ALPHABETIC ORDER – Ant, Antelope, Artist, Balloon, Beluga, Cotton 
• Rainbow Write: Ant, Antelope 

• Fancy Words: Ant, Antelope, Artist, Balloon 
• Word Search: Go into your file and find the word search. Cut it out and glue into your Daily 5 book when you are done.   
• NOW YOU CAN CUT OUT YOUR WORDS! 
• Speed Sort – Use the iPad to race yourself, 3 times!  
• Blind Sort/Partner Sort – Have somebody say the words to you, and you point to the right category.  
•
