Monday, May 11th Lessons

I made a bit of a new thingy for you guys, check it out! I am calling this my "Digital Classroom!" So if you see anywhere in today's work that you need to click in the Digital Classroom this is where you will find it!
You Might notice you can click on some things right in it! All of the Epic Books from this week are in it, I've shared some photos and art of students. So if you want to be included next week, send me some pictures of your artwork or you working hard!

LANGUAGE (1 hr - Mixture of Online/Offline):

1. Week 10 of Reading Comprehension posted on the blog - Complete Day 1 today

2. Read for at least 20 minutes via Raz Kids, Epic, or your choice of book - Please see post below about Epic! I can tell some of you have not been doing your assigned work!

3. New Words Their Way posted last Monday. This Monday’s task is putting the words in Alphabetical order. This video supports them utilizing the Words Their Way Slides I’ve provided on Google Classroom: https://youtu.be/kvFSFLvM4AM

4. Digital Citizenship: In grade 4 we have noticed that some students are not remaining responsible with their choices online. In both 4A and 4B this week, students will be exploring what is acceptable, responsible communication online and what entails unacceptable, irresponsible communication online. 

1. Today’s lesson is around media choices, finding balance in the digital world, and multitasking with technology. Please follow along with the slides posted here:

MATH (1 hr - Mixture of Online/Offline):

We have finished our Addition and Subtraction unit - please ensure you have wrapped up the booklet provided on Google Classroom and finished the Quizizz assessment!

We are starting on Time this week. So, if you didn't make yourself a Pie Plate Clock yet, please look at Wednesday's post from last week to get yourself prepped and ready!

I had provided the following two books for students to read to help them with this unit:

Time - A nice summary of what they have learned in grade ⅔ - Click here

Measuring Time with a Clock - This one gets more into some of the concepts that are covered in grade 4 and is a nice introduction to what learning we will be doing - Click here

As many students have not logged into Epic, you are already missing this base instruction. Please ensure you have read the two books posted up above before you continue on!

Your new Math Booklet is posted on Google Classroom This can be completed over the next week at their own pace. Here is the accompanying Math Slideshow to go with this weeks math lessons!

Please refer to the videos as necessary, you should not watch them all in one go. Please watch a section such as the five-minute intervals (it's highlighted on the slides with titles) and complete the work in your math booklet that has to do with those slides. Go back to slides and watch the next section, then return to your booklet.

Practice 20 minutes daily on Prodigy or Study Ladder Math - Both have math concepts that are targeting concepts covered this week and will help reinforce your understanding. 

SCIENCE (1 hr Online): 

We are learning about Food Webs, Food Chains, and Predators and Prey this week. 

1. Today’s task is attached to the slide show posted on the top of the Blog (The one that looks like a classroom! - I am calling this my Digital Classroom).
1. Watch the Bill Nye video on Food Webs - Look for the Laptop that shows the Bill Nye logo in the Digital Classroom and click on it!
2. Read one of the books posted on the Bookshelf in the Digital Classroom - all linked for you to click on from Epic!

FLIPGRID (15 mins - Online Task):

Mrs. Taylor and I have combined forces to make a grade 4 Flipgrid for students to interact with each other and practice public speaking (and English conversation) skills while also getting to socialize with their friends from both classes. The shared Flipgrid can be accessed by clicking here. You will need to log in with your school-issued email like before. If you need assistance with Flipgrid here are two videos to help out! Last week there was a “Would You Rather?” question provided. This week you can discuss some ideas around our Digital Citizenship unit and what is your favourite website to visit!

For those of you checking over the weekend...

To Check Google Classroom for what you need to finish: 

1. Go to Google Classroom.

2. Click on the "Classwork" tab

3. Click on the "show your work" which is circled in pink.

Also, check the blog posts below to ensure you've completed your tasks such as: Flipgrid, Prodigy, Words Their Way, Reading Comprehension, Science Booklet about carnivores, herbivores, omnivores, etc. Your Addition/Subtraction Math Booklets, and your Social Studies Global stories Flipgrid.

Also, don't forget to make a paper plate clock! Check Wednesday's post if you have no idea what I am talking about!

I've noticed that a lot of you haven't been logging into Epic to read the books I have provided you to assist you with your lessons. Epic has created a new tool for teachers... it allows to see me who has been reading each day! I can see that Aroush, Gianna, Jayden, Jayvier, Maranelo, Ming Kee, Norocos, Rachel, Sophia, and Tiffany all read on Epic! and must have followed my directions and done their class assignments this week!

Those who practiced hard on XtraMath: Aroush, Gianna, Irin, Jayden, Jayvier, Maranelo, Ming Kee, Norocos, Rae-E, Sophia, Tiffany, and Yu Wei!

I'm also going to ask you to do a reading assessment on Raz Kids over the next week. Please log onto your Raz Kids and look for the assessment icon that looks like this:

Click on the assessment, then click on the book or passage provided for you: 

You will then be asked if you have enough time (10-15 minutes) and you will have to record yourself reading and answer a few questions! This is for me to see how your reading is going and if I should adjust your level. 

Remember: At very least you should be reading 20 minutes every day! This will make sure your reading gets better!

Wednesday, May 6th Work & Weekend Catch-up

As we have no school on Thursday & Friday, please use this time to catch up on any overdue work. If you are all caught up after today's tasks you can be a Pickle and pick anything from the bottom of this post!

LANGUAGE (1 hr):

1. Complete day 5 of reading comprehension - Reading Comprehension is posted on Google Classroom.

2. Read for at least 20 minutes via Raz Kids, Epic, or your choice of book - I would suggest you check out some of the parts of speech books in this collection (click here). Some students really struggled with picking out nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc. in our Gimkit today!

3. New Words Their Way posted on Monday. Wednesday's task is to write sentences with the second half of their words! Need help using the slides I posted? Click this video! https://youtu.be/kvFSFLvM4AM

SOCIAL STUDIES (1 hr) (Online): (I only had 2 students complete this so I am assigning again)

1. Read global stories on Epic!. There are 32 stories shared on Epic! For you. you can choose a few to read that interest you.

2. After reading you can answer the following questions on the Flipgrid:

Did you know that more than 7 billion people share this planet with us?

What did you notice that was similar to your life? What did you notice that was different?

(If tech limitations make Flipgrid an issue, these questions can be written down and scanned or emailed directly to me).

MATH (1 hr):

Some students are needing to finish up our addition and subtraction unit. Please ensure you have done so by Monday so you are ready to move on.

Catch-up & Finishing up our Addition and Subtraction unit:

1. Keep working on Topic 3 & 4 of your math booklets - Booklet posted on Google Classroom & the slides/video lessons for these are found here: Addition & Subtraction Slides - Due May 11th. Please remember to click “turn in” when you have finished the entire booklet. A reminder: the games/printables are optional extra support. 

2. Quizizz Math Addition & Subtraction checkup: posted on Google Classroom for you. You have 2 chances to go through the 10 questions. Don't cheat! Must be finished by May 11th. 

3. Practice for at least 20 minutes on Prodigy: I set up a pre-assessment for you to complete. 11 of you are finished. If you aren't sure... send me a Google Hangout message. Please make sure you complete this on your own as I need to know what you know and how I can help you get better!

For those that are done all of the previous work as well as recommended completion over the weekend:

1. Practice one round on XtraMath - 11 students are so close to passing levels - one student is almost done XtraMath completely! Once you have beat division you have shown mastery of your math facts - and you don't need to practice anymore.

2. There are 2 great books on Epic! That can be read at your leisure over the next 5 days until we are back on Monday.

Yesterday you had a “Would You Rather…?!” prompt to choose from. If you did not finish this, please do it over the next few days.

When you are done I would like you to reply to 3 of the other grade 4’s - either from our class or Mrs. Taylor’s!

Need some ideas? Say hey, start a healthy debate about which is better, or agree if you also think the same and would choose the same thing!

SCIENCE (1 hr) (Catch-up for those not done): 

1. Please make sure you have read the books posted last week on Omnivore, Herbivore, Carnivore, as well as Producer and Consumer. You need to understand these terms to be able to move through the next part.
2. Please read page 3 entitled “Living Things and Energy” (labelled page 15 in the pdf) and complete page 4 “How Do We Get Energy? Reading Response” (labelled page 16) of your science booklet, which is posted on Google Classroom - do not turn this in yet! If the text is too difficult for you, I posted a video on Monday's lesson - look below!

4. We will do a Google Meet at 10:00 am for a funny read-aloud and using the Gimkit that was well-received last week to practice the parts of speech we’ve been learning about with our Mad Libs practice!

Students need to access the Meet through Google Classroom. The link is posted on Google Classroom at 9:55 am. Please do not ask me for the link or where it is.. it will be posted on Google Classroom at 9:55 am. See picture below.

Please work through the questions independently/on your own so I am able to get an accurate understanding of your strengths and weaknesses. 4. Optional Math: Yesterday was a toughy! If anybody did it I would love to see it. Today’s problem is around some “Lost Data” - Students need to fill in the blanks to figure out which section of the pie chart or bar graph belongs to which group of students - There is 40 students total and they are given 1 out of the 4 numbers. It’s a bit of a puzzle! - Click here for the problem.
